Volunteerism in the Bible
The Bible has a lot to say about volunteerism and the importance of helping others. In the book of Matthew, Jesus commands us to “love thy neighbor as thyself” (Mark 12:31, Matthew 22:39). This commandment is often seen as an invitation for Christians to serve their neighbor through acts of kindness and volunteering.
The book of Proverbs says “Those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed” (Proverbs 11:25). This verse is often interpreted to mean that when we give of ourselves, we are replenished in return. Volunteering can be a great way to practice this truth by giving of our time and energy while receiving joy and satisfaction in return.
The Apostle Paul also speaks on the importance of service in Galatians 5:13, saying “Through love serve one another.” This verse is often seen as an encouragement to serve those around us with humility and gratitude, knowing that we are doing it for the Lord.
